Recordings of My Ballet Exercises May/July 2010

Jul 19th, 2010 | Posted by Bonnie

Uploaded video recordings of me learning continuous pirouettes, faili assemblé, etc! It is incredibly hard to do these recordings in between ballet exercises during class and learning the exercise itself. It hurts my ability to learn in class and do the exercises, but I think it’s useful for reviewing my technique and seeing if I improve over time.

You know what the solution is? I need to find myself a dance videographer. Any volunteers?

Pointe Videos from my 6th Pointe Class (July 2010) – After about one year of beginner ballet classes, I started doing a 30 minutes pointe class once every 1-2 weeks – if I’m busy it ends up being 1 class every 3 weeks. These are videos from my 6th pointe class. I am really excited to post this, because I am actually doing steps without the bar! This is a major breakthrough for me.

Right Pique Turns – I can complete the turn, but like my left foot I’m not going on the pointe very well.

Left Piques – My left is not as strong as my right so I can’t do the turns, but wow I also did not realize how far I was from actually going on pointe of the shoe.

Walking on Pointe – When you’re on pointe, just walking can be a challenge! My arch needs a lot of work. There isn’t much of one…

Ballet Exercises from May 2010 - I can really tell the improvement in my technique. It’s easier to feel the improvement with simpler slower exercises, but even here I can see that my turn out is better and I’m cutting into my fifth better than when I first started.

Tendu Coupe Exercise – Next time, I need to focus on my arms more and keeping my legs straight.

Fondue Exercise

Learning Faili Assemblé Combination for the First Time – The most important correction I got when I learned this combination was to keep it going! I need to work on continuing the exercise. I tend to stop in between the faili assemble and the next faili assemble instead of going into the next one smoothly. I actually do this for other combinations too. I need to focus on my transitions more.

Learning Continuous Pirouettes for the First Time – I tried this again the other day and was better at it the second time around. The trick for me is rhythm. Once I got the timing down it was much easier to keep the pirouettes going. I probably have gotten a stronger core and ankles since then too, but timing is key. Another thing that helped me with continuous pirouettes was overshooting the spot.

Développé Exercise at the Center – The part that makes the biggest difference in how well my développé looks is the start. If I get a good start, I can usually go higher. The trickiest part about this exercise is the promenade because this is the first time I’ve done it in second. Normally I am doing it in arabesque

Jazz Styled Pirouette and Leaps July 2010

Tried some Jazz styled pirouette and leaps and man did I feel out of place. The experience was completely different. The pirouettes have a different start and use parallel feet for pirouettes. I was surprised it threw me off a bit.

I got some good suggestions for my turns and leaps.

Turns:

  • Focus on one spot
  • Focus on contracting your core
  • Keep your arms straight and up
  • Pin your foot to your knee
    Leaps:

  • Focus on a softer landing
  • Point your back leg

I can’t wait to record this again at the end of the year and see if I can improve on some of this.
